HISTORY & GHOSTS

Stirling Old Town Jail was opened as a County Jail in 1847 to replace the old Tolbooth Jail which, at the time, had been condemned for being “the worst Jail in Britain”. Whilst the newly Victorian Jail was indeed a vast improvement on the previous jail, it certainly wasn’t a walk in the park for those who found themselves spending time inside! Many prisoners, as a form of punishment, would have spent hours working the “crank machine” (a repetitive task of lifting and dropping sand – for no purpose other than for punishment) and for other more “deserving” inmates, time spent in the “dark room”- solitary confinement in a tiny chamber with only a small light source some 40 feet above.

By 1888, the County Jail became the Military Detention Barracks for the Scottish Regiment, until decommissioned by the War Office in 1935. During the mid-20th Century, the jail fell into disrepair until the 1990’s when restoration work was carried out on this derelict site. In 1996 – 2012 and again in 2015 to the present day, the jail has served as a tourists visitor site

Sounds of screaming, bodies being dragged up the corridors and poltergeist activity is just some of the reports from the visitors as well as some strange sounds, feelings and actual marks on visitors bodies.

This event will take place in the dark, please bring a torch with you for moving around the building. Due to The nature of the event please wear sensible clothing and footwear for all weather conditions. Please remember to bring snacks for the evening as we don’t want to mistake a ghostly sound for a rumbling belly. You may also want to bring a camera with you to snap some photos or video. You're also welcome to bring any ghost hunting equipment with you. The event is for people ages 18 and over and we advise pregnant woman not to attend. Alcohol and illegal drugs are not permitted, anyone who attends under the influence will not gain entry and will not be refunded.
